What sets FD People apart?
It’s a seemingly simple question that any Managing Director worth their salt should be able to answer. And of course, I can – we provide bespoke and quality HR, Health & Safety and Payroll solutions to a wide spectrum of clients, offering expertise and hands-on support to tackle any people related issues.
However, I recently got to thinking beyond the elevator pitch created in boardrooms – with shiny whiteboards and bright post-its – about what really sets FD People apart. It’s fair to say the people compliance market is littered with big players who have grown through aggressive sales strategies and major mergers and acquisitions. But these large players have one thing in common, and that’s the identikit packages they offer – my firm view is that a ‘square peg, round hole’ approach does not meet the needs of most businesses emerging from a pandemic and entering an entirely new world of work.
So what are our USPs?
In terms of what makes us special, I have landed on the following three most important aspects that really resonate for me:
- We are ‘People People’
It might seem like an obvious one for a business with HR at our core, but in a market which has become increasingly call centre driven, this is absolutely key for me. HR, Health & Safety and Payroll are all about people, and whatever issue a client is facing, it is important this is addressed with a human touch. We genuinely love nothing better than building relationships with clients, on a personal and professional level. All of our consultants are hired not just for their expertise, but also for their personality, and what unifies all of us is that we truly care about our clients. We know what our clients are striving to achieve, we take delight in their success and when the chips are down, we are in the trenches with them helping them through the people issues faced.
- We are all about providing a tailored service
When I started FD People, I knew there was a gap in the market coming from a large employment consultancy environment. I could see clients were increasingly frustrated by off the shelf packages which serve more as a box ticking exercise, often shoe horning businesses into unwieldy compliance management systems and lengthy contracts, sometimes between 5 and 10 years! I wanted to create a service which was truly tailored to the needs of each individual client, and that’s exactly what we have done. To this day, our bespoke approach to client needs is central to what we do – some clients work with us on a year round retainer, some work with us on specialist projects and other clients do a combination of both. We also won’t tie you into a decade long contract – if the last few years have taught us anything, things can turn on a dime in business, and we also know once you start working with us you won’t look back!
- We have a unique approach
In an increasingly litigious world, people issues come with risk and it is our job to support our clients to mitigate risk, saving time and giving peace of mind. Despite this, there is a growing tendency in our industry to provide ‘insurance safe’ advice which results in clients jumping through unnecessary hoops time and time again. Our approach is fundamentally different – we will protect you from risk, but we are also grounded in the real world and will approach people situations in a practical and commercial way. And do we really make a difference?
Reflecting on the last 8 years since I joined FD, it’s been a whirlwind:
- We’ve grown from a start-up within French Duncan to an established employment compliance business and recently established a Health & Safety offering;
- We have built up a full spectrum of clients, from SMEs and Owner Managed Businesses to charities and a range of public sector frameworks;
- We consistently receive great feedback from our clients and get involved in hugely interesting projects; and
- Our talented team of professionals have been recognised as Finalists for s1 jobs HR Team of the Year for the last 3 years.
All of these are great accolades and I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved. But critically, I feel they prove that doing things a bit differently really works. We’ve only achieved these things because we have hired good people, offered a tailored service and been pragmatic & commercial in our advice. We’ve got to where we are today because of exactly those three things.
So what next?
