Binn Group

Background

Binn Group is Scotland’s largest independent and leading provider of integrated recycling and Waste Management Services.  It takes a comprehensive approach, from collection and processing through to recycling and transforming waste into reusable resources. A family owned business, the company has over 20 years expertise and currently employs around 130 people.

FD People started to work with Binn Group in August 2021.  The company was already growing, and was keen to continue that growth, and therefore they wanted to ensure their HR and people strategy was both robust and efficient for what the company needed now and in the future.

Impact We Had

Since working together we have provided the business with clarity and confidence in their HR strategy, something which is important in any business.  This is of particular relevance to Binn Group due to the very competitive and challenging market they operate in – with around 70 of their 130 employees being drivers.

We have also helped raise the profile and understanding of HR across the business, and indeed we are now assisting Binn Group appoint an in-house HR Coordinator who will report internally but work alongside FD People staff on specific projects.

What We Did

Upon appointment the FD People team firstly undertook an HR Audit, diving into the business and reviewing all HR processes, practices and procedures.  This was done quickly and efficiently in around one month, and it provides a great foundation for any business as it identifies areas for improvement as well as things you are already doing well.

The Binn Group had a good base to work from, but we identified a few areas that could use a refresh which the team at FD People have been undertaking since then. We have worked with the internal team to implement a new employee handbook and refreshed contracts of employment. We’ve introduced a new probationary procedure and introduced a performance improvement process. In addition, we have supported the business achieve Living Wage Accreditation, and run various staff training initiatives in areas such as dealing with disciplinary issues and developing management skills.

Since we started working together the company has also grown through a recent acquisition, and FD People were there to support this and help manage the TUPE process involved.
